Felipe Esparza

Felipe Esparza

Felipe Esparza is a product of the streets of East Los Angeles, he is a comedian and actor, best known for his raw, real-life comedy that audiences everywhere can relate to. Felipe won NBC’s Last Comic Standing in 2010, and soon after, starred in and produced his first 1 hour Showtime special “They’re Not Gonna Laugh at You,” (now available on DVD and streaming on Netflix) and is now touring and selling out comedy clubs and theaters across the world. He also launched a popular new podcast in 2014, entitled, “What’s Up Fool?, on the All Things Comedy podcast network. Felipe is a recurring character on NBC’s “Superstore” and has an upcoming one-hour comedy special due to premier on a major cable network in the Fall of 2017.

Felipe Esparza is an actor and standup comedian who first rose to fame in 2010 after winning NBC’s Last Comic Standing. He then wrote and produced his first one hour special, They’re Not Gonna Laugh at You, for Showtime and Netflix.
Felipe Esparza grew up in the Pico Aliso housing projects in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles, where he was involved in drugs and gang activity. After a stint in rehab and struggling to make ends meet with a series of odd jobs, he began pursuing a career as a comedian. In addition to winning the top prize on Last Comic Standing, Felipe has appeared on numerous television shows, including “The Eric Andre Show”, “Arsenio Hall”, “The Tonight Show”, “Lopez Tonight”, TruTV’s “World’s Dumbest”, Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and “Russell Simmons Presents Stand-Up at the El Rey”, “Comics Unleashed”, Showtime’s “Comics Without Borders”, BET’s “Comic View”, and Galavisión’s “Que Locos” (where he had more appearances than any other comedian). In 2009, he appeared in his first two feature-length films, “The Deported”, with Nick Turturro, Talia Shire, and Paul Rodriguez and “I’m Not Like That No More”, a film based on his stand-up comedy where he stars as Paul Rodriguez’ son.

Felipe has also appeared in two major ad campaigns – first as the Latino spokesman for the 2015 Honda Fit, a campaign that was highly praised by Adweek, and the second was for Target Mobile services with three different, quirky, fast-paced commercials co-starring Felipe and Lauren Lapkus (Orange Is the New Black). Felipe has also recently been featured on the popular Comedy Central storytelling series, “This Is Not Happening” and will make return appearances in the new season of “The Eric Andre Show” premiering summer 2017.
Felipe Esparza is a comedian and actor getting his start as a comedian all because someone asked him to list 5 goals in life. During a stint in rehab before he was 21, Felipe was asked what he wanted out of life. As an immigrant Mexican boy growing up in the projects in Boyle Heights (East L.A.) and then as a teenage father with a drug and alcohol problem, it was a difficult question because he had never thought that far ahead. Among the items on that list, “to be happy”, and “be a stand-up comedian” – because of how he connected to an old Bill Cosby album when he was younger. Up until that time, Felipe was under the impression that life was over at 18.

But if you had told him back then that all this life experience would one day make people laugh, he wouldn’t have believed it. From growing up as a poor immigrant in a family of 9 to living in the most gang-infested neighborhood in the country to winning NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”, to selling out live comedy shows all over the country and being able to act in TV shows and movies, Felipe’s life has been anything but boring. He worked for years as a stand-up comedian, opening on the road for fellow comedians such as Gabriel Iglesias and Paul Rodriguez, then took a leap of faith and went out on his own – which led to very little income and opportunity at first.

After the 16-year “overnight success” of winning Last Comic Standing, Felipe went on to produce his first hour long stand-up comedy special, “They’re Not Gonna Laugh at You” (now on Netflix). He also had several TV appearances such as recurring roles on “The Eric Andre Show” and NBC’s “Superstore”, TruTV’s “World’s Dumbest” and “Russell Simmons Presents Stand-Up at the El Rey” and was the spokesman for a national Honda campaign and a national Target Mobile campaign. During his early years as a comedian, Felipe was part of the successful stand-up comedy TV show, “Que Locos” on Galavisión (the only English-speaking show on Spanish television). That show and the resulting tour helped launch the careers of several other Latino comedians such as George Lopez, Gabriel Iglesias and Willie Barcena.

Today, in addition to his live stand-up touring, Felipe hosts a weekly podcast on the All Things Comedy Network called “What’s Up Fool?” that focuses on interesting stories from just about anybody. From renowned author and humanitarian Father Greg Boyle from Homeboy Industries, to actor Damian Chapa (Miklo from Blood In, Blood Out), to the lead detective on the Night Stalker serial killer case, to actor Emilio Rivera (from Sons of Anarchy) to even the “Incredible Hulk” who takes photos with tourists on Hollywood Blvd., Felipe believes everyone has a story to tell about how they got where they are, no matter who they are.

As of 2016, Felipe has filmed and self-produced his second hour-long stand-up special, “Translate This” which is in post-production for a 2017 release. He is also developing a sitcom for ABC with fellow comedian Dustin Ybarra and writers Bobby Bowman and Peter Murrietta – Felipe and Dustin will play brothers in a single-camera comedy to be produced by ABC Studios and 3Arts Entertainment.
